In this video I show how to wire a spur socket to a ring final circuit using 2 methods, 1. By using a junction box and connecting into the ring circuit cable.
Spur using a junction box. If there is no socket outlet nearby, an alternative is to use a junction box. This is similar to the previous method, but instead of connecting to a socket, a junction box is connected into the ring and the spur .A junction box is used to add a spur or to extend circuits and direct power to lights and additional sockets. The easiest way to fit an extra socket to an existing ring circuit is by adding a spur. A spur comes off the ring circuit via a junction box, or more usually via an existing socket - which ever is easier. Welcome to my tutorial on installing a spur socket to a ring final or radial circuit. In this video i also explain the differences between ring final and rad. There are various ways of extending a lighting circuit to add lighting points: You could run a spur from the last ceiling rose in a loop-in circuit; run a spur from an existing junction box, or from a new junction box; or run a fused .
Socket Outlets – Spur from a Junction Box. Power may be supplied to a spur via a maintenance-free junction box inserted in the ring main, provided the limitations of the regulations are not exceeded.Hi all I currently have a set of sockets on one side of the room wired to the main fuse box as (right side sockets) I want to add another socket almost immediately next to the main fuse box, can I simply put a junction box on the wire coming .Each fused spur socket contains an individual fuse which detects these faults, helping to protect against damage and potential shocks. Hi folks. I cut one of the cables on my ring circuit, attached the 2 now separate ends to a new 30a junction box, and then run 2 additional spurs from the same junction box, using 32a twin and earth, on the end of each of these new spurs is a twin plug socket with usb.
But can a ring mains with a spur from a junction box be mixed with spurs from sockets? From memory it'll be no biggy to put into a socket now if it can't be, just there will be a junction box and join left in place as a negative. Adding more sockets to the study and will almost be a 1 spur per socket for ease for the sockets above desk height.Adding extra sockets to ring with a junction box Electrical Hey all. The upstairs ring in my house has very little in the way of sockets. I’d like to add an extra double socket in two rooms. . Now I’m considering using a spur off a junction box, twice. Joined 11 Nov 2007 Messages 5 Reaction score . Can I run two seperate cables from a junction box connected to the ring circuit which will make three connections in all in the junction . I am planning to install two sockets in my new .Begin by installing the spur socket and run a length of 2.5 mm² two-core-and-earth cable back to the point where it will be connected to the main circuit cable. The junction box should have the same amperage as the circuit. Top tip. Make sure you’re connecting to the correct socket terminals – their position varies between brands. .
If I was to change the 2.5mm cable to 6mm so from consumer unit and provided they would both fit in the socket I would then have 2x 6mm in the metal clad socket then a 6mm cable to 30amp junction box, spur off using 6mm cable to outside weatherproof socket I have 4mm tuff type weatherproof cable at the moment again advised this was sufficient!!!
Ahh okay so the ring runs through the junction box and two spurs off of the same junction box Definitely against the regs, you can only spur once of a ring main socket. Also the junction box sounds under-rated, ring mains are rated 32A so would always say junctions boxes need to be rated equally or above
Additionally, my preference would be to convert the socket to a junction box and use this to create an unfused spur to the opposite wall, where I would add a double socket (this would be an additional 3m of 2.5 T+E cable).
What you describe is a spur. If you need this socket on the ring, then 2 junction boxes are needed to extend both cables. Or you could use a double pattress and blanking plate with 2 sets of 30A choc-block which would be neater. In this case, not spur-off-spur, but separate cables coming from a junction box on the ring for example, each treated as individual unfused spurs. From a socket, the limitation is what is practical given the cable capacity limitations of the terminals. But electrically, this is the same as having several junction boxes in a row, inches apart on . Consumer Unit -----socket----junction box spur ----Socket -----socket-- back to consumber unit in the second example I have made a ring out of the spur but the junction main circuit could carry on? I hope I have made sense :) sparx Project Manager Posts: 2166 Joined: Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:33 pm

Hi, I have a socket that I need to move but the cables are too short. it’s a ring main (2 wires going in). couple of questions. Could I run the two existing wires into a junction box and then spur the new socket off these? What is the risk if . Today I cut into the ring main and using a junction box created a spur for a new double socket. The JB is fixed to a joist in the loft and very accessible for inspection. I know i could have extended the ring, but I have little space to work in and this was just easier.
Spur Limitations. Only one socket outlet can be connected to a spur. (This can be a single or double outlet). Hello again. The cable (2.5mm2) from the consumer unit to the socket junction box is approx 15 metres in length. The cable to the two sockets fed from the junction box are approx 3.5 metres each and I've run approx 5.5 metres of 2.5mm2 from the junction box to the switched fused connection unit (3 A).
It looks like there's a fused spur that has been run into the loft to power the lighting for our bathroom & extractor-light combo, but strangely the neutral doesn't look to be wired into it. Would it be possibly to wire in the neutral to the fused socket and add in a power socket without breaking the existing circuit for the lights and extractor? Rather than have the ring main in the back of the sockets, is it acceptable to use 30amp junction boxes and effectively spur the socket (as in the diagram)? Would make the job a little easier. Load on the sockets are protected with max 13amp plugtops. If it is possible, is there a max number of junction boxes can be added. Thanks
We recommend IP66 junction boxes with timer sockets for maximum control over exterior lighting. Install a cable entry gland for extra protection from dust and water inside electric junction boxes. . I’ve seen a spur from the ring to a single sockets and a FCU from the boiler. Can you run a spur socket off a spur? You can’t run a spur from a piece of equipment that’s already on a piece of equipment. If you want to run a spur from an existing sockets, you can use a junction box wired into the main circuit cable. Please ignore the title, I didn't mean extend, but spur. I need to add a double socket. On another wall is a double socket with two 2.5 t+e cables, so I guess that's part of the ring main. I will go up into the loft and use a 30amp junction box from Screwfix to spur and drop a new 2.5 t+e cable around 10 feet away to a new double socket.
I would make the argument (and I'm not a professional): Will the circuit protective device protect all parts of the circuit from overload? A single spur: generally yes - as even a double socket is usually only rated to carry 20A combined (correct me if there are ones that truely can carry more). 2.5mm2 cable is usually good for 20A (often a fair bit more).
